Founded in 1958 by Charles J. Reid, a plumbing contractor, the company started as "Charles J. Reid, Inc.", and initially provided plumbing services to new construction residential and commercial customers in Bergen, Rockland, and Passaic Counties.

Several months after starting the company, Donald Van Natta joined Charles and together, they grew the company to be one of the largest plumbing companies serving the Northern New Jersey Area during the 1960's

After the retirement of Charles J. Reid in 1972, the company continued to expand and offer more services under the leadership of Donald Van Natta. In the early 1970's, the company added hydronic heating services which is a common fit for plumbing contractors, and partnered with various HVAC contractors to offer combined plumbing, heating, and air conditioning services.

In the early 1980's, Don Van Natta acquired an interest in "All County Heating & Air
Conditioning" which later became the HVAC division of Van Natta Mechanical Corp.

In the mid 1980's, the company added electrical contracting services through the acquisition of "HRT Electric" and "Lauer Electric", which then became the Electrical division of Van Natta Mechanical Corp.

In 1986 the company name was changed from Charles J Reid, Inc. to "The Van Natta Contracting Corporation" and renamed again to "Van Natta Mechanical Corp." in 1989 to better reflect the scope of services the company provided.

In the 1990's, Don Van Natta continued to expand the company by marketing and packaging coordinated services for Plumbing, HVAC, and Electrical trades, and expanding into the renovation and service markets.

In 2000, the company was faced with the challenge of the untimely passing of Don Van Natta. The next generation of leadership was determined to continue with the principles of craftsmanship, honesty and integrity that he ingrained into the company culture.
